Friday’s Fave Five – May 19

It’s early Friday morning. The smoke we were under has dissipated and the sky is clear; we’re in for a great day. Makiya doesn’t have school today and it feels a bit like Saturday. Funny how one small change in routine creates such ripples.

I’m tired. Bone weary tired. I feel it in my body as I’m sitting here in my wing chair tapping out these words. The fact that I don’t have to get M off to school has something to do with it. Kind of like the Friday night letdown I used to feel at the end of the work week when I was feee to just let go. I’m not sure what the day will bring but there’s something on my mind I have a hankering to do. It’s nothing huge, just a small something I’ll suggest once Gerry and Makiya are up.

I’m going to attend a new writers’ group this evening. It’s a good week when one has the opportunity to go to not one, but two, writers’ groups. I’m also going to purchase tickets to the upcoming Saskatchewan Festival of words. Have I told you that Moose Jaw is a writer’s paradise?

Anyway, I haven’t done a Friday’s Fave Five post in a while. Seems like a good time to look back and take note of good things from the week that was, so here we go.

Gerry and I decided to go to one vehicle when we moved to Moose Jaw. The city’s not very big (population approximately 34,000) and we’re both retired. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Factor in a granddaughter who goes to school in a village 24km away and it’s a bit more complicated. It seems like revolving doors around here some days. He comes home; I go out. Rinse and repeat. We’ve gone out together to run a few errands this week and that simple change in routine was great. (My secret plan for today includes more of the same.)

It’s been a topsy-turvey week weather wise—hot enough that we needed to turn the AC on for the first time, and cool enough that I donned sweats and socks one day. The good thing is that the AC that didn’t seem to be functioning at first, is now running smooth as anything and we’re ready for some serious heat.

With the warm days this week, and before we broke down and switched on the air conditioning, I served summer salad cold suppers on a couple of days. Cold cuts, cheese, potato salad, pasta salad, and Jello. Simply delicious!

According to my Goodreads reading challenge, I’m 12 books ahead of schedule. I’m going to surpass the modest goal I set for myself this year and that can only be a good thing. Currently, I’m reading The Cure for Death By Lightning by Gail Anderson-Dargatz and enjoying it thoroughly.

A few perennials are blooming in our yard. I don’t know what they are but am enjoying daily surprises of colour. We’re talking about putting down mulch because weeds are growing as fast as the plants we want to keep. The first year with new home and yard is always an adventure—one I continue to be thrilled we’re taking!
